There is a growing economy called the Sharing Economy.  It's where ordinary folks begin to have side businesses to supplement their income. One well-known side business is with Uber. These Uber drivers are working for themselves through Uber. 

As a tax preparer with H&R Block, I am finding that a lot of these folks don't realize that they are now in business for themselves. When you are self-employed, keeping track of expenses is VITAL.

Of course keeping track of income is important too, because you need to claim that income on your income taxes every year. Where you can help yourself is lowering your tax bill is in keeping track of expenses. As a bookkeeper, I use QuickBooks from Intuit for my own business. It would be a good investment for Uber drivers too. You can track whatever you pay for gas, oil changes, tires, and other expenses for your vehicle and it will help you with your taxes. There is also a QuickBooks Online version where you can keep track of things using your smartphone with either the iOS or Android app.

You should keep track of expenses such as gas, tires, and oil changes. You can also deduct the cost of software or software subscription for bookkeeping as a business expense.  Don't forget to track all the miles you drive for Uber also because that that's another way to claim auto expenses.

You may have thought that being an Uber driver would be simple. All you need to do is drive people around and get paid for it. You can make money but you have to also keep good records and track your expense. Uber drivers, it's time to learn a bit of bookkeeping.

A lot of new businesses are started by people who are really eager to get started doing their thing. They want to get customers, make their products, and just open for business. They are probably thinking that they can just spend a few hours a week keeping track of sales, purchases and other "figures" and call it bookkeeping. They are right, if they want to do it wrong.
